Obesity: A Preventable Disease

Obesity is a chronic, frequently progressing, life-threatening disease. Obesity is no longer considered a cosmetic issue caused by overeating and a lack of self-control. On the contrary, the World Health Organization (W.H.O.), along with National and International medical and scientific societies, now recognize obesity as a chronic progressive disease resulting from multiple environmental and genetic factors.

The disease of obesity is extremely costly not only in terms of economics, but also in terms of individual and societal health, longevity, and psychological well-being. Obesity leads to life-threatening conditions like heart disease, stroke, Type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, and certain types of cancer. Due to its progressive nature, obesity requires life-long treatment and control.

If you have tried and failed to lose weight completely on your own, we have tools and a team of professionals to help you meet your goals.

Bariatric Surgery Options

Weight loss surgery is about whole health improvement. It can improve your life and the multiple medical illnesses associated with being overweight.

Our Surgery Center includes a team of highly motivated and experienced bariatric surgeon, physician, cardiologist, pulmonologist, dietician, and a psychologist who care for bariatric surgery patients. This includes an efficient and friendly preoperative evaluation and screening process, along with a comprehensive long-term follow-up plan.

Marion Health offers two different surgical procedures:

  • Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (sleeve gastrectomy)
  • Gastric Bypass

All bariatric surgery procedures performed at Marion Health use a laparoscopic technique for a less invasive surgery and a more expedited recovery process. Surgeries performed by a fellowship-trained surgeon using state-of-the-art tools typically result in less complications and an overall better experience.

Marion Health’s comprehensive weight loss program takes a multifaceted approach to medical and surgical weight loss. Success of the surgery -- weight loss and quality of life improvements -- is determined by each patient. Results vary and depend greatly on your motivation and long-term compliance. We partner with you to help make your surgery and treatment a lifelong success.
